Fireworks: Japan's Weather Experiment to Shame the Moon - Gizmodo

Lithium balls of light. Sounds great.

Fireworks: Japan's Weather Experiment to Shame the Moon - Gizmodo: "In its never-ending quest to out-Sci-Fi the world, Japan is treating its citizens to what they're calling a 'space fireworks show' - resulting from an experiment to study the atmosphere. On Sunday night at 7:26 PM (in Japan) an S-520 rocket will be launched into the sky and release lithium vapor into the ionosphere, creating three huge red balls of light - both as big and bright as the moon -- to be seen in the sky for one and a half minutes."

Digital Photography: Rename your digital photos in bulk - Lifehacker

Digital Photography: Rename your digital photos in bulk - Lifehacker: "Digital Photography Rename your digital photos in bulk You've got 342 pics from your trip to the Grand Canyon. Do you have about 3 extra hours to name them something other than 45929_23.jpg? Me neither. Digital photography guru Derrick Story has a workaround: * First, open the folder and select View > Thumbnails. * Click the last picture in the folder you want to rename, hold down the Shift key, and click the first picture; this will select them all. * Right-click the first photo, and select Rename from the drop-down menu. * Windows XP will highlight the filename for the first photo, enabling you to give it a descriptive name. * After you type in the name, click the white space outside of the photo and watch as Windows applies the name with a sequential number to each picture in the folder."

Ring Road opens up August 31

Good news - Ring road will be open again. Now I can walk straight from the parking lot to the engineering building and back to my car each day. This will probably mean that I won't make it to the gym as often as I won't have to walk past it on the way to the car. Also I won't have to put up with all the nature that I walk past everyday and I'll probably start drinking the sub par coffee in Nibbles and Bytes. Actually I think this sucks. I'm going to start a petition to permanently close Ring road so I am forced to enjoy all these things. Who's with me?

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS! -- Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

This movie won't be out until August of next year but I'm already getting psyched about it every time I read about it.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS!: "What I loved about this movie was that, very much like 'Hot Fuzz', it spoofs the action genre (specifically, Tarantino movies) while still managing to be a pretty great action movie itself. And not only that, it's funnier than most straight comedies could ever hope to be." - Ain't it cool news

Lifehacker Firefox tip - don't type www or http:// or .com

Tricky old Firefox

You already know you can use Ctrl+Enter to avoid typing http://www or .com when entering URLs in the Firefox address bar. Along those same lines, you can even go to a web site's subpages without typing the protocol or top level domain. Try it: type apple/trailers into the Firefox address bar and press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter for Mac users). Her Foxiness will fill in the http://www and .com in all the right places and zip you right along to Apple's Trailers section of the site. Same works for lifehacker/software/downloads, too. Nifty!

The mayor isn't optimistic

It's not looking good for the QOTSA concert at the Orpheum. We need a new venue I think. The article I read says the mayor isn't optimistic about a deal before labour day. I guess that's what you can expect when people drop garbage outside his condo.

Inside staff respond to offer: "But Mayor Sam Sullivan said he was disappointed the union rejected the city's two offers -- both modelled on the deal that brought down picket lines in North Vancouver -- and did not share Faoro's optimism about when a deal might be reached. 'I was hoping we would achieve labour peace by Labour Day, which is what would have been the result of acceptance [of one of the two city deals],' Sullivan said, adding that from what he has seen, that no longer looks possible."

Lower Mainland civic bargaining 2007 - News: "VANCOUVER – After reviewing the City of Vancouver's two non-negotiated offers over the weekend, CUPE 15’s bargaining committee hand-delivered a counter-offer to their employer at City Hall today at 9:30 a.m. The union is also calling on the City to return to the table immediately, either independently, with the assistance of a recognized facilitator/mediator or through the services of BC’s Labour Relations Board. I just want some wire!

I just called Home Depot. I was put through to one department then they said I had to speak to the Hardware department then they said I had to speak to the electrical department. I got through to the Electrical department and the guy answered. I told him I was inquiring about the price of 12 gage wire and what length the roll comes in. He said "Oh boy! I'll just help this customer and I'll be right with you. I'll put the phone on my belt." With phone on belt, he finished with the customer. Then I heard him ask a couple of people if they needed help and I was practically yelling into the phone to remind him to pick up. Next I hear him chatting with what I assume is a coworker about how he has a phone interview and that he works awfully hard for the amount of money he gets paid. I am waiting for him to remember that I am on the phone and he is bitching about his job and discussing a job interview. Buddy you are a real prize. I hung up the phone and explain that I had been kept on hold and the lady says they are swamped in the electrical department and that she will have them call back immediately when they have a free associate. And so I wait.

Robots: PicoBotz Let You Build Your Own Robot on the Cheap - Gizmodo

Robots: PicoBotz Let You Build Your Own Robot on the Cheap - Gizmodo: "These $77 PicoBotz kits are the perfect thing to let the budding engineer (your kids) get their hands on some robotics. The 'robot' has 180 programmable commands and operates in three modes, obstacle avoidance, sound repositioning mode, and line tracing mode. It also runs on two AA batteries, just like the Cylons from Battlestar Galactica. It's also a good thing these bots have their 'kill all humans and enslave humanity' mode removed. That first version didn't sell so well."

Seinfeldian Chain

Online Seinfeldian Chain

Are you having troubles getting things done. For long term projects the Seinfeldian chain may be a great motivator for you. For each day you accomplish the related task you get to put an X on the calendar. After you have kept up the process for a few days you see a chain of X's emerge and the key is to not let the chain be broken. Even if you only do a small amount towards the end goal, these small steps supposedly produce large results over time. So try it or don't.
