Fireworks: Japan's Weather Experiment to Shame the Moon - Gizmodo: "In its never-ending quest to out-Sci-Fi the world, Japan is treating its citizens to what they're calling a 'space fireworks show' - resulting from an experiment to study the atmosphere. On Sunday night at 7:26 PM (in Japan) an S-520 rocket will be launched into the sky and release lithium vapor into the ionosphere, creating three huge red balls of light - both as big and bright as the moon -- to be seen in the sky for one and a half minutes."

Digital Photography: Rename your digital photos in bulk - Lifehacker: "Digital Photography Rename your digital photos in bulk You've got 342 pics from your trip to the Grand Canyon. Do you have about 3 extra hours to name them something other than 45929_23.jpg? Me neither. Digital photography guru Derrick Story has a workaround: * First, open the folder and select View > Thumbnails. * Click the last picture in the folder you want to rename, hold down the Shift key, and click the first picture; this will select them all. * Right-click the first photo, and select Rename from the drop-down menu. * Windows XP will highlight the filename for the first photo, enabling you to give it a descriptive name. * After you type in the name, click the white space outside of the photo and watch as Windows applies the name with a sequential number to each picture in the folder."

Ring Road opens up August 31
Good news - Ring road will be open again. Now I can walk straight from the parking lot to the engineering building and back to my car each day. This will probably mean that I won't make it to the gym as often as I won't have to walk past it on the way to the car. Also I won't have to put up with all the nature that I walk past everyday and I'll probably start drinking the sub par coffee in Nibbles and Bytes. Actually I think this sucks. I'm going to start a petition to permanently close Ring road so I am forced to enjoy all these things. Who's with me?

And not only that, it's funnier than most straight comedies could ever hope to be." - Ain't it cool news

Lifehacker Firefox tip - don't type www or http:// or .com
Tricky old Firefox
You already know you can use Ctrl+Enter to avoid typing http://www or .com when entering URLs in the Firefox address bar. Along those same lines, you can even go to a web site's subpages without typing the protocol or top level domain. Try it: type apple/trailers into the Firefox address bar and press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter for Mac users). Her Foxiness will fill in the http://www and .com in all the right places and zip you right along to Apple's Trailers section of the site. Same works for lifehacker/software/downloads, too. Nifty!

The mayor isn't optimistic
It's not looking good for the QOTSA concert at the Orpheum. We need a new venue I think. The article I read says the mayor isn't optimistic about a deal before labour day. I guess that's what you can expect when people drop garbage outside his condo.
Inside staff respond to offer: "But Mayor Sam Sullivan said he was disappointed the union rejected the city's two offers -- both modelled on the deal that brought down picket lines in North Vancouver -- and did not share Faoro's optimism about when a deal might be reached. 'I was hoping we would achieve labour peace by Labour Day, which is what would have been the result of acceptance [of one of the two city deals],' Sullivan said, adding that from what he has seen, that no longer looks possible."

I just want some wire!
I just called Home Depot. I was put through to one department then they said I had to speak to the Hardware department then they said I had to speak to the electrical department. I got through to the Electrical department and the guy answered. I told him I was inquiring about the price of 12 gage wire and what length the roll comes in. He said "Oh boy! I'll just help this customer and I'll be right with you. I'll put the phone on my belt." With phone on belt, he finished with the customer. Then I heard him ask a couple of people if they needed help and I was practically yelling into the phone to remind him to pick up. Next I hear him chatting with what I assume is a coworker about how he has a phone interview and that he works awfully hard for the amount of money he gets paid. I am waiting for him to remember that I am on the phone and he is bitching about his job and discussing a job interview. Buddy you are a real prize. I hung up the phone and explain that I had been kept on hold and the lady says they are swamped in the electrical department and that she will have them call back immediately when they have a free associate. And so I wait.

Online Seinfeldian Chain
Are you having troubles getting things done. For long term projects the Seinfeldian chain may be a great motivator for you. For each day you accomplish the related task you get to put an X on the calendar. After you have kept up the process for a few days you see a chain of X's emerge and the key is to not let the chain be broken. Even if you only do a small amount towards the end goal, these small steps supposedly produce large results over time. So try it or don't.

Zodiac Review
I watched Zodiac Thursday night. Super violent. Suspenseful. Realistic (as far as I can tell). As a bonus they threw in Gooseman as the cop's partner and even velcroed down more hair on him than he had in Top Gun. I'd probably give it an 8/10 kind of a rating but I don't really bother with those things.

“Lars is a good friend of mine. He played me the demos from San Francisco, and I turned and looked at him and I said, ‘Master that shit and put it out.’ It’s ridiculous. The demos were sick. Eight-minute songs, all these tempo changes, crazy fast. It’s like, ‘Dude, don’t get slower when you get older, but don’t get faster!? How are you gonna play this live?’ And then me and Lars were out partying all night, and he had to go in the studio the next day and do this stupid like nine or ten minute song, and I was laughing at him — because he played me the demo of it, and it was [sings really fast drum part], so fast. I called him, and said, ‘Dude, how are you feeling?’ He was like, ‘Dude, I’m hurting.’ They’re cutting everything to tape, no fuckin’ Pro Tools — live, no clicks. Bitchin’. I dig it. I’m really excited for them.”
I realize he says that he is a friend of Lars but this could be good news. Just don't go to crazy in the studio cleaning it up.

Homme and Anger Management
Chris Lee of the Los Angeles Times reports: If you really want to hear about it, Josh Homme, creative mastermind behind QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, will tell you about his temper — about the three separate court-ordered sessions of anger-management classes he had to take and their effect on his life. "I learned nothing through anger management," Homme said flatly, seated earlier this month in a tequila bottle-strewn North Hollywood studio that reeked of stale marijuana.
With a little prodding, Homme (rhymes with "mommy") will admit he is still on probation after pleading no contest to two counts of battery against Blag Dahlia, the lead singer of a punk outfit called the DWARVES. It happened at the Dragonfly club in Hollywood three years ago; an incident Homme regrets not one iota.
"I went there to attack and humiliate him," he said. "That's what I did."

"Following last week's RPG kidnapping, the gaming community in Brazil has suffered another shock. An 18-year-old has been hospitalized after being struck by lightning while he was gaming. Aguinaldo César Alves, from Jardim Campos ElÃseos, 60 miles from Sao Paolo, had one joystick in his hand and another in his mouth when he was hit yesterday afternoon. The proof, as if you needed it, that Mother Nature can be a bitch sometimes, was left in the teen's bedroom wall.

It's not the kind of crack your average teenage boy dreams about in his bedroom, is it? Aguinaldo was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be out today as his injuries are not thought to be too serious. Up until yesterday's incident, it was thought that lightning preferred iPods to other gadgets." - Gizmodo

A wrap up of the last week
I found out from the bank that my credit was destroyed by an old account's service fees. I was told that there will probably be a strike in Vancouver that will cause the cancellation of the QOTSA concert I have bought tickets for. I went to work Friday and I was told for the third time from the same company that they were going to lay me off because there is a strike that will affect business. I went to my sister's birthday dinner Saturday and went to take a picture and my camera was broken. All in all, not a good week. Hoping this week is a tad better.

Poker Pros to Face Off With Computer
Poker Pros to Face Off With Computer: "Poker champion Phil Laak has a good chance of winning when he sits down this week to play 2,000 hands of Texas Hold'em - against a computer. It may be the last chance he gets. Computers have gotten a lot better at poker in recent years; they're good enough now to challenge top professionals like Laak, who won the World Poker Tour invitational in 2004. But it's only a matter of time before the machines take a commanding lead in the war for poker supremacy."

Semiconductors rule the world!
Unique Material May Allow Capacitors to Store More Energy
Imagine an electric car with the same acceleration capability as a gas-powered sports car, or ultrafast rechargeable “batteries” that can be recharged a thousand times more than existing conventional batteries. According to physicists at North Carolina State University, all of these things are possible, thanks to their research on a polymer – or plastic material – that when used as a dielectric in capacitors may allow the capacitors to store up to seven times more energy than those currently in use.

You can add any webpage into a tab on igoogle if that's what you're into. I've put a QOTSA tab and a Google reader tab on mine. If you want to try it, create a new tab, then check out this link igoogle window
In the settings you can point the page to any page you want but it covers any other gadgets you have on the page so do it in a new tab. It's pretty sweet if you want to just log in to igoogle and not have a bunch of other things going on.

Puscifer news - It's Maynard
TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan recently spoke to RollingStone.com about his new recording project, PUSCIFER. According to Keenan, PUSCIFER 'is my attempt to make music to inspire people. Heavy rock is sinking, the industry is dying. This is definitely not thinking man's music, but groove-oriented music that makes you feel good.'
Keenan describes PUSCIFER as 'more of a collaboration' than a group. Contributors include PRIMUS drummer Tim Alexander, guitarist-soundscaper Jonny Polonsky and, on vocals, Lisa Germano and actress Milla Jovovich. And Keenan says the music could end up as more than just an album, which he expects to issue in October. 'I'd like to release it in different ways — maybe two songs at a time, every three or four months. You can do that now, with the Internet and MySpace. In a way, I feel like I'm standing in two places at once. I have my right foot in then, and my left foot on to the next stage.'

Sweet beard dudeMetallica singer stopped at airport for 'Taliban' beard - Yahoo! News
Metallica frontman James Hetfield was stopped by security officials at London's Luton Airport for allegedly having a "Taliban-like" beard.ADVERTISEMENTThe band was on its way to perform at Live Earth on Saturday (July 7).Hetfield was briefly questioned by airport officials until they realised who he was. No explanation was given for why he was stopped, but his bandmates speculated that it was due to his beard.Meanwhile, Metallica's new album is due out in early 2008, with bassist Robertt Trujillo telling Blabbermouth: "There's a lot of everything, man. There's speed on this. There's a couple of tracks where you're gonna go, 'Wow!' and I know you're gonna like it because it has the flavor of the old. But it has this kind of groove and power behind it that I think is us today."

The Interface With Eagles of Death Metal: Download the free podcast - AOL Music
Five Things About the Eagles of Death Metal take from http://spinner.aol.com/artists/the-interface/eagles-death-metalThe Interface With Eagles of Death Metal: Download the free podcast - AOL Music
1. Let's explain the band name S.A.T.-prep style. Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes are to death metal what Don Henley is to rock 'n' roll. But Henley probably has a lot more money (and a lot less leather).
2. The gods of rock summoned Josh and Jesse to their altar in 1998, though the pair has been friends since high school.
3. Baby Duck. Boots Electric. Carlo Von Sexron. J. Devil Huge. What do these bizarre names have in common? They're all aliases used by Josh and Jesse.
4. They have ruling song titles: 'Shasta Beast,' 'Bag O' Miracles,' 'Poor Doggie,' etc.
5. They have no qualms about selling to their songs for use in commercials and have done just that for Wendy's, Nissan, Pontiac and Payless Shoes. * Learn more about the Eagles of Death Metal

Five internet TV shows
Forever Geek suggested these 5 web tv shows. Maybe check them out. later.
5. The Elvis and Jack Mysteries - This animated show goes way back to the first .com crash, but it’s still online, and it’s still awesome. The concept? Before Elvis Presley and golfer Jack Nicklaus were legends in their respective fields…they were crime fighting friends. This show has a theme song so catchy I have been randomly singing it for most of this century. This is the only show on the list not currently in production.
4.Port City PD - a low budget cop show featuring a talented cast, and an interesting storyline - it’s Miami Vice for the Internet age. The show is wrapping up its first season now, but expect more episodes in the future. Warning: Foul Language and Adult Situations.
3. Clark and Michael - Clark and Michael are trying to sell their sitcom, and watching them do it is funny as all hell. Michael Cera for Arrested Development and Superbad fame is the “Michael” of this duo and he and Clark play off each other so well you actually believe in and root for, these two under dog characters.
2. Derek & Simon: The Show - Did you ever wonder what a show directed by Bob from Mr. Show would be like if it was about two guys kinda doin’ nothing of importance? Well wonder no more my friend, because that show is a reality and it is called Derek & Simon: The Show. This show is finely crafted absurdist humor at it’s very best. You’ll also find Michael Cera in a particularly entertaining episode of this show, playing the role of a bouncer. Warning: Foul Language and Adult Situations.

1. Break a Leg - This show is my favorite show that isn’t on a major network. I just love the hell out of it. It’s the story of David Penn, a writer who just got his first sitcom deal…which didn’t turn out to be everything he expected. Besides the normal stuff that you’d run into with producing a sitcom with no money, David also has to worry about the fact that he’s going to die at the end of the season. The show begins there and David narrates the show as he tells us the story of how he got to that point.
Well acted, well shot, and well produced, “Break a Leg” is a truly independent production that shows us what is capable with a little budget and a lot of talent.
Water from air
Taken from the Gizmodo websiteGizmodo
There's a lot of water floating around in the air everywhere, and inventor Max Whisson has figured out a way to extract it using Max Water, a wind-powered contraption he named after himself. Max Water uses the concept of condensation, where lower temperature allows less water to hang around in the air, and Whisson says that will amount to 10,000 liters per day dripping from this single rooftop device. Man, that's a lot of water.
Those interested in this device better be mighty thirsty, though, because they'll have to shell out $43,000 for one of these babies. But if you've ever been in a region where there's no water, spending $43K is a whole lot better than dying of thirst. If this idea really works as well as its inventor says it does, economies of scale will make that high price a temporary hurdle. [UberReview]

The plots of KILL BILL 3 and 4 have been shaped and there is a chance director Quentin Tarantino will return to China to shoot them, an executive producer of the first two films said on Friday, according to CRI English.Bennett Walsh said at the Shanghai International Film Festival the third film involves the revenge of two killers whose arms and eyes were hacked by Uma Thurman in the first stories. The fourth instalment of the popular kung fu action films concerns a cycle of reprisals and daughters who avenge their mother's deaths, Hangzhou-based newspaper City Express quoted Bennett as saying. When asked which Chinese director he wants to cooperate with, Walsh said he would most like to work with Jiang Wen, director of Xun Qiang, or "Missing Gun"."I also want to collaborate with younger directors. I believe there are many outstanding young directors in China who have not been brought into the light," Walsh said.
